FINAL PRESS RELEASE 2005-06 SEASON

       HENRY CLAY KHSHL STATE CHAMPIONS!!!

           UPEND BALLARD BRUINS, 4-3

               Great tournament in Louisville features close games;

                Overtime in semifinal and a one-goal  final game;

          Lagler Coach of the Year; Heckmann Player of  the Year

The highest scoring team in the KHSHL needed every one of their goals to nail down their first ever KHSHL State Championship Sunday March 5th at Iceland Sports Complex.

One of just two teams to have previously won the top level state title in the KHSHL, the Ballard Bruins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the final game behind a Kyle Roshburg goal, one of five he would score in the final two games.  The Blue Devils answered with four unanswered goals, three of them by Ecton Green, the other by Bryce Cotton, each of whom had four goals in the tournament.

Ballard fought back with great heart however, as  Michael Getz (the high goal scorer in the tournament with six), netted one and Roshburg got his second of the game, cutting the margin to 4-3, with just over 10 minutes to play.

The Blue Devils showed they can play defense too when it matters, as goalie Ben Cotton and his defense were able to hold the #3 seeded Bruins at bay, including having to kill a couple of penalties in the final minutes. After a tension filled last few minutes, the Blue Devils could celebrate their "double championship", as they capped off their regular season crown in the Lexington Division's regular season, with the KHSHL State Tournament Championship as well.

Blue Devils Head Coach Rob Lagler was named COACH OF THE YEAR,  for his team's double championship, and high scoring forward Brad Heckmann of Lexington Catholic was voted PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

A capsule summary of all seven games of the tournament can be found on the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP page of the official league website, www.khshl.org

Congratulations to Henry Clay, champions!
